Sunil Joshi hails from Halgude, Barshi. Severe drought conditions forced him to leave his village during childhood, and settle in Solapur. Since then, he has been working tirelessly on issues related to water that has afflicted the people of Maharashtra. During 1990-1999, he worked as a Sub-editor with Sakal newspaper in Pune and Solapur. His outlook towards life changed when he read the biography Johad – by the ‘waterman of India’ Rajendra Singhji. Inspired by the book in 2003, he started spreading awareness about water conservation under the banner of Jalabiradari.
