In 1989, Sabarmatee, along with her father Radha Mohan founded ‘Sambhav’ a non-profit organisation that promotes biodiversity conservation, organic farming and revival of indigenous varieties of grain and vegetables. ‘Sambhav’ has rejuvenated and restored more than 90 acres of wasteland in the Nayagarh District of Odisha using organic farming techniques. ‘Sambhav’ promotes the ‘System of Rice Intensification’ designed to maximise rice yields. Sabarmatee with her small group of volunteers has also built three rainwater harvesting systems and conserved 5000 acres of forest. In recognition of her work in sustainable development and gender justice, Sabarmatee and her father were awarded the Padmashree, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 2020.
