Kalinga Centre for Rainforest Ecology (KCRE) located in Shivmoga, Karnataka was founded in 2012 by Dr. P. Gowri Shankar. Dr Shankar is a wildlife biologist who was recognized as the ‘Herpetologist of the Year 2015’, has about 11 scientific papers to his credit and has been featured in several wildlife documentaries. Since its inception, KCRE has rescued and relocated thousands of king cobras. KCRE also conducts Scientific Training on Reptile Management (STORM), a pioneering initiative that educates people about king cobras, their breeding biology, habitats and rescue methods. The NGO organizes Summer School for children during which the kids get to spend time with nature and explore the diverse life forms in the rainforest.
